In Ontario, the practice of psychotherapy is regulated by two colleges: the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the Ontario Social Worker/Social Service Worker College (OSWSSW). Professionals registered with these colleges are legally and ethically authorized to provide psychotherapy services. The CRPO designates them as Registered Psychotherapists (RP) or RP (Qualifying), while the OSWSSW uses the designation Registered Social Worker (RSW) for those permitted to practice psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy primarily involves talk-based therapy with the goal of enhancing individuals' mental health and overall well-being. These highly trained professionals work with individuals and couples in personalized, one-on-one settings. The core of psychotherapy lies in the collaborative relationship between the RP or RP (Qualifying) and the client, where both parties work together to facilitate positive changes in the client's thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and social functioning.

It is important to note that while psychotherapists who are members of the CRPO or the OSWSSW are regulated practitioners, insurance coverage for their services can vary. It is advisable for individuals to carefully review their insurance policies or contact their insurance providers to understand the extent of coverage for psychotherapy services provided by RSWs or RPs. This allows individuals to make informed decisions regarding the financial aspects of seeking psychotherapy.
